Altona Pier

Location:Ā Altona
Time from CBD:Ā
45 mins
Type of fish:Ā Flathead, pinkies, snapper

In recent years,Ā Altona PierĀ hasĀ jumped into the limelightĀ for the fact that it is home to some rare Pokemon.

However, back in the real world, the recent addition of the artificial reef about 50m from the end of the pier makes this a great location for catching actual fish too. Itā€™s also close to a natural reef and rocks that provide fishers with a huge number of snappers during the warmer months.

Youā€™re likely to seize the largest number of fish when thereā€™s a tide change. Pinkies are caught when thereā€™s a huge tide coming in while flatheads are caught when the tideā€™s low.

Yarra River

Were someone to hypothetically cruise Melbourne and ask random people, ā€œWhatā€™s the best fishing spot near me?ā€, then he or she would hear about Yarra River in no time at all. AnĀ Australian iconĀ if there ever was one, the epic waterway ultimately stretches for over 250 km. Along the way, youā€™ll find boat cruises, parks, nightlife, events, a casino, and yes, some seriously good fishing spots.

If you need someplace specific to start your journey, check outĀ Warrandyte State Park, Punt Road Bridge, orĀ Yarra Bend Park, through which this river runs. Youā€™ll be glad you did.

Type of fishing: Bank or river
Expect to find: Bream, Estuary Perch, Mullet, Mulloway, Redfin, Carp, Murray Cod, and more.
Rules or hazards: Only 2 fishing lines are permitted, catch & release is encouraged, and certain restrictions or prohibitions may apply when fishing from specific areas.

Gem Pier Fishing Overview

Iā€™d look at fishing on weekdays, evenings or early mornings to avoid crowds in warmer weather. During weekends and on public holidays, Gem Pier is really too busy for my taste.

A lot of Pinkies, Flathead andĀ BreamĀ get reported as caught from the pier at times. Often on pilchards and prawns.

But Iā€™ve seen some effective use ofĀ soft plasticsĀ for Flathead, too.

Some fishoā€™s claim it tends to get more bites than when fishing Altona Pier.Ā But in my own experience, this hasnā€™t been the case.

I tend to find it a bit busy quite often. Thereā€™s a lot of shipping traffic, at times the navy births here.

In terms of bait. The most common bay baits seem to work well. Pippis,Ā squid, pilchards, whitebait, sandworms, chicken and of course prawns.

Iā€™d recommend keeping the hook size down and the lines lightweight. Some of the smaller flathead andĀ whitingĀ rigs sold commercially would be a good fit.
